Germinal is delighted to be named by European Seed as one of The 20 Most Climate Friendly Companies Over 2021.

Targeting Net Zero by 2040

As a forward-thinking company, we were proud to be recognised for our efforts to breed grass and forage seed that can help the agriculture industry become more sustainable.

In 2021, we helped establish the Net Zero from Productive Grassland Partnership (NZPGP) with major stakeholders from the UK agricultural supply chain.

We belive that food production can be more sustainable by improving soil health and grassland management, livestock nutrient use efficiency and emissions, and agri-food and bio-fuel systems.

As part of our own net-zero ambitions, we have three long-term targets:

  1. Become net-zero by 2040 while achieving an interim target of a 66% decrease from our 1990 carbon levels by 2030
  2. Provide innovative food and farming solutions to help farmers also achieve net-zero emissions by 2030
  3. Rally the UK agriculture industry to exceed the government's net-zero targets by 2050

Reducing emissions every day

Along with our climate-smart products, which include the Aber High Sugar Grass range, Germinal has invested in several lasting changes to ensure we reduce our carbon footprint every day.

As reported by European Seed, we are currently transitioning to a fleet of hybrid cars for our technical experts and investing in electric forklift trucks for our warehouses.

We have also introduced recylcing points in our offices and workspaces, while waste management systems are routinely reviewed and improved.

For many companies, packaging remains an issue. However, we have already made the effort to ensure our packaging is made of recycled materials.

As for energy consumption, we have already fitted state-of-the-art solar panels on our warehouses to further boost our sustainability efforts.

More changes on the horizon

Moving foward, we aim to reduce and eventually end our use of printed materials. We also plan to supplement our existing solar panels by installing more power generation technology across our facilities.

Germinal believes in proactively addressing climate change and will continue to increase our efforts to exceed our net-zero targets and make a lasting difference for future generations.

Germinal Horizon remains committed to research and innovation that will provide farmers with climate smart solutions that support productive and profitable farming.
