Following cutting-edge development and rigorous testing, AberSevern is the newest variety launched in Germinal’s Aber High Sugar Grass (HSG) range.
AberSevern is available for the first time this year and has debuted on the 2023/24 BSPB Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RGCL) for England and Wales.
Climate smart production
This late diploid perennial ryegrass represents an evolutionary step forward for the Aber HSG range, which offers varieties that are more efficient at using grass protein in ruminant livestock.
When combined in Germinal mixtures with other AberHSG varieties, AberSevern can reduce emissions of ammonia and nitrous oxide while increasing meat and milk production. Trials in dairy cattle showed an average reduction in ammonia emissions of 24% and increases in milk yield by as much as 6%.
15% greater ME Yields
Combining yield and quality, AberSevern tops the list with a grazing yield of 111% and grazing digestibility of 78.8%. This combination of yield and quality gives you an increase in metabolisable energy (ME) yield of 15% over a standard ryegrass.
AberSevern offers exceptional yield for silage, particularly in the first cut, and will give you the highest quality silage in the first and second cuts.

Available exclusively in Germinal mixtures
In 2024, AberSevern will be available exclusively in Germinal mixtures. In Aber HSG 4 Dairy System, this mixture offers outstanding grazing yield and two high-quality silage cuts.
While reducing livestock emissions, this mixture also contains white clover to feed companion grasses with a natural nitrogen source. This will minimise the need for artificial nitrogen, helping farmers to cut fertiliser costs while reducing their environmental impact.
